Word salads (secondary)
In this resource we’ll look at what grammar is and why we need it. First of all, take a look at the word salads. They can be found in the Activity pages within the menu entitled 'This Unit' in the upper right of this page. The slides show real spoken sentences drawn from our corpus, which have been jumbled up into the wrong order. The students' task is to rearrange the words into an order that makes sense. (Note that there are no clues from initial capital letters or full stops to help you.) You might find more than one order that makes sense.
Activity 1:
- Select a card and hold it to drag words around the screen.
- Join words by dragging one word close beside another, which will flash.
- Separate them by double-clicking or tapping a word.
Activity 2
In this task you will see some words jumbled up. Your task is to join them into multiple sentences with five words each.
- Select a card and hold it to drag words around the screen.
- Join words by dragging one word close beside another, which will flash.
- Separate them by double-clicking or tapping a word.
Compare your sentences with the sentences others have made. Did you come up with different ideas? What do you notice about the patterns? Can you sort the words into groups depending on where they appear in the sentences?
Activity 3:
In this task you will see some more words jumbled up. Your task is to join them into the longest, grammatical sentences you can manage. The longer your sentences and the fewer words you leave at the end, the higher your score!
- Select a card and hold it to drag words around the screen.
- Join words by dragging one word close beside another, which will flash.
- Separate them by double-clicking or tapping a word.
