Glossary: common gender noun

Explanation

Common gender nouns refer to people of either, or any, gender. For example, contrast daughter (female) and son (male) with child (common). Other examples of common gender nouns are certain roles and jobs such as guest or writer. Note that some male nouns referring to jobs can now be used as common gender, e.g. actor for male and female.
