What is the difference between using a contraction and using each word separately?

Negative contractions

  • Don't you want to go to the movie? 
  • *Do not you want to go to the movie
  • Wouldn't you think so?
  • *Would not you think so?
  • Couldn't you help out?
  • *Could not you help out?

Pronoun+Verb contractions

  • Jo and you are in for a surprise.
  • *Jo and you're in for a surprise.
  • She often is right.
  • *She often's right.

Should we call all of these contractions? Are they the same type of thing?
